Summoned to appear

THE officer in charge at the Suva Remand Centre has been summoned to appear in the High Court in Suva on Wednesday.

High Court judge Justice Janaka Bandara yesterday ordered that the officer appear in court with medical reports of a remand inmate charged with rape.

This was after the court was told the trial of the accused was to have started last Monday but was deferred because he had experienced severe chest pains and had to be taken to the CWM Hospital.

The accused is alleged to have raped his wife.

The accused told Justice Bandara he was still experiencing chest pains, adding that he was not given any medication during the hospital visit.

He claimed that he was taken to the hospital after collapsing three times from his chest condition.

"I am beginning to think that you are trying your level best to evade trial," Justice Bandara said.

The man disagreed and said he had been complaining of chest pains but was only given pain-relieving medication at the remand centre. The matter has been adjourned to December 11.
