Protection responsibility

THE ultimate responsibility for protecting the marine environment inevitably lies with Pacific Island countries themselves and not regional agencies such as the Secretariat of the Pacific Community, says Pacific Islands Applied Geocience Commission (SOPAC) director Professor Mike Petterson.

"I have to stress that, while SOPAC will continue to play an important role in helping countries to agree common standards, the ultimate responsibility for protecting the marine environment inevitably lies with Pacific Island countries themselves," he said.

Prof Petterson added that while regional agencies such as SPC and SOPAC would continue to provide technical assistance, it was critical that information, data and forums, such as the one being organised in Nadi, were used to develop regulations prior to the commencement of deep-sea mining activities in the Pacific.
