History for commission

THE Constitution makes it mandatory that legal services be provided to low income earners, a move Legal Aid director Sunil Sharma described as "historic.

Speaking at the 15th Attorney-General's Conference in Natadola last week, he said this was the first time the Constitution dedicated a section to legal aid.

"This section mandates the Legal Aid Commission to provide legal aid services to those members of the public who cannot afford the services of a legal practitioner," Mr Sharma said.

He said the abolishment of merits testing since November last year meant that more people had access to legal aid services.
