YOUNGSTER Menash Fareed continued his brilliant form in the National Chess Championship creating another upset yesterday.
The 12-year-old defeated former national champion and New Zealand-based Ashish Gautam at the FASANOC Olympic House in Suva to trail leader Candidate Master Calvin Prasad on the leader board.
Fareed had earlier beaten Olympiad rep Goru Arvind and CM Noel Adricula to remain unbeaten, amassing three points in the JR White-sponsored championship.
Fiji Chess Federation president Doctor Virgilio de Asa was impressed with Fareed's performance.
Fareed is using the four-day event to prepare for the upcoming World Youth Championship which will be held in the United Arab Emirates later this month.
"This is a very surprising performance from the youngster.
"He asked if he could take part in this tournament as build-up for his international event and he has surprised by beating three veterans in this championship."
Today Fareed will take on pre tournament favourites Manoj Kumar who is all but out of title contention. Kumar lost to Prasad and John Caldera.
Prasad who has a perfect four from four rounds he has played in so far is on bye today.
In the ladies division, veteran Gloria Sukhu leads the charge on 3.5 followed by Kabrina Terubea and Jacqueline Masilomani tied on three points apiece.
