FIJI and the Republic of Kazakhstan have established diplomatic relations.

This after Fijian ambassador to the United Arab Emirates Robin Nair presented his credentials as a non-resident ambassador of Fiji to the Republic of Kazakhstan last month.

An Information Ministry statement issued on Thursday said Mr Nair was received at the Ak Orda, Presidential Place in capital Astana by the secretary of state of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Marat Tazhin.

In the statement, Mr Nair conveyed the greetings from the President, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, to Mr Tazhin.

"Fiji's presence in Central Asia, and in particular Kazakhstan, was most important in furthering Fiji's diplomatic relations by advancing its bilateral and multilateral relations with the country and the region," he said.

He said Fiji looked forward to engaging with Kazakhstan in the international arena on issues of common global interests.
