A NEWBORN baby who was abandoned in the bush and bitten by mongoose is recovering at the Labasa Hospital.
His 23-year-old mother allegedly abandoned him in a bush for two days.
He was found by a passer-by on Thursday morning.
The baby was abandoned at Vanivacea, Tabia outside Labasa Town early this week.
Divisional police commander Northern SSP Naulumatua Lutunacaucau said the baby was found alive in the bush.
"The incident occurred on Tuesday and the baby was found on Thursday.
"He (baby) is now recovering in hospital and the woman as well who is under our custody," SSP Lutunacaucau said.
"The baby was found lying on his stomach. He sustained injuries and cuts from mongoose bites.
"He survived alone in the bush for two days without being fed or looked after."
SSP Lutunacaucau said the woman would be charged once discharged from hospital.
He said police officers were guarding her in hospital.
"This is a very serious issue and we are warning parents who attempt to abandon their children like this that the law will not tolerate such behaviour."
Investigations into the matter is continuing.
