A man of character

NELSON Mandela was a man of humanity and confidence.

This was the sentiment of former prime minister Sitiveni Rabuka who had the privilege of seeing Mr Mandela during the 50th anniversary of the United Nations in New York in the year 1995.

Describing his experience, Mr Rabuka said while he did not have an opportunity to speak to Mr Mandela, seeing him showed how great he was.

"Yes, I met him at the 50th anniversary of the United Nations in 1995 in New York. In fact, I have a photograph of world leaders at that time — he was there with Bill Clinton standing in the middle of the front row," he said.

He said after seeing him, he quickly figured out that Mr Mandela was a humble man with a lot of character.

"Even if I did not speak to him, I could see the character in his personality."

He said Mr Mandela was a great man who had a lot of faith.

"I can say that since his arrival on the centre stage of world affairs and having gone through the 27 years of imprisonment and to come out victorious in the elections and dismantle apartheid, I think the world will always remember that."
