Update: 11:05AM THE media should be free to report in all matters in a fair and balanced manner.
Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama made this comment at the opening of the 15th Attorney Generals Conference this morning.
He said the media authority existed not to muzzle the press but to ensure issues were reported in a fair and balanced manner.
"The media plays a critical role in a constitutional democracy but more so in a developing country like Fiji and in particular, given our political history, both before and after independence," he said.
"I fundamentally believe that the media should be free to report on all matters in a balanced and professional manner.
"The Media Industry Development Decree actually provides for that."
