THE tokatoka of Nakuruvakarua spent about $60,000 for the funeral of the late Ratu Sakiusa Makutu. This is apart from gifts and financial assistance from delegations that presented their i reguregu.
ABOUT 200 tabua were used at the funeral of the paramount chief of Nadroga yesterday. Cuvu district representative Ratu Tevita Makutu said all delegations that presented their i reguregu brought a tabua as a sign of respect for the great leader.
ABOUT 350kg of kava was consumed during the week-long funeral gathering of the Na Kalevu. A team from the chiefly village and the vanua of Yavuha Huna specifically looked after the distribution of grog to various sheds and homes that accommodated guests in the village.
Meat and fuel
ABOUT 50 cows and 70 pigs were slaughtered at Cuvu Village. These were used as magiti during the funeral and fed about 3000 people. About 2000 drums of kerosene were also presented at the funeral of Ratu Sakiusa Makutu.
PALLBEARERS of the late Na Kalevu who carried the coffin from the chiefly home to its burial site are from Tore Village and the vanua of Davutukia, Vatukarasa and Navosa. The late Ratu Sakiusa is a vasu to Tore Village.
Tradition dictates for the people in the West that the maternal side play this role.
A GOVERNMENT delegation led by Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama presented its i reguregu yesterday. The delegation included Works Minister Timoci Natuva and heads of government departments in the West.
Warriors on guard
TRADITIONAL warriors of Na Kalevu Ratu Sakiusa Makutu were on alert guarding the body of its fallen chief at Cuvu Village yesterday. The warriors were from Volivoli, Nadroumai, Yavulo and Semo villages.
Ra and Kadavu
THE province of Ra and Kadavu were among the last delegations to present their i reguregu to the late Ratu Sakiusa Makutu on Wednesday night. The other 12 provinces presented their i reguregu to the late chief, including the 21 districts in the Nadroga Navosa province.
