ABOUT $20million has been allocated for general road maintenance and renewals with more funds allocated to specific projects to upgrade rural roads in the North.

Fiji Roads Authority CEO Neil Cook said this allocation would also be used for new jetties, repair of existing jetties and repair or replacement of crossings and bridges, as well as the continuation of the Buca Bay-Savusavu and Dreketi-Nabouwalu highways.

Mr Cook said work continued on the roads in the North, adding that significant sums of money would be dedicated to the region's roads next year.

"A significant project for 2014 is the upgrade of the Labasa bus stand and this is a project that will require input from Labasa Town Council and FRA as we maximise value from the money we will be spending on this upgrade, and associated improvements in the area," he said.

"FRA is very happy with the start that Fulton Hogan Hiways has made in the North.

"There is very positive feedback coming from all quarters, including employees, public transport operators, government officials and the general public."
