CHAMPION hockey club Ventures showed its true class making a clean sweep of the Mates 25th anniversary tournament at Nadovu Park in Lautoka yesterday.
Ventures defended the titles in both the men's and women's divisions.
National rep Hector Smith Junior was the star for the Ventures men's team scoring the lone goal in the final against Stingers.
In the women's semi-final Ventures edged Marist 5-4 on penalty strokes.
Fiji Hockey Federation development officer Tai Smith said the focus would now shift to the matches against the touring Australia under-21 team next month.
She said they would be fielding many U18 players for the series against Australia.
"The matches against Australia will serve as our build-up to the 2014 Olympic Youth Games qualifiers in Vanuatu next March," Smith said.
"The Mates tournament was well organised. The most exciting thing was that the organisers invited the former players and administrators of Lautoka hockey for a social gathering on Saturday.
"We will now prepare for the Australian U21 team that will be here soon. We will also start our preparations for the Fiji U18 play-offs in Vanuatu.
Smith said the play-offs will serve as the qualifiers for the Nanjing Olympic Youth Games in China.
"We will be going to Vanuatu in March and have a good chance of qualifying," she said.
"The selection process is going. We hope to announce a 25 member training squad in the second week of December."
