OCCASIONS like Diwali bring people together in a unique spirit of togetherness and harmony.
This is the view of the Australian head of mission, Glenn Miles, speaking at Diwali celebrations hosted by the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Nadi Town Council last week.
Although a relative newcomer to the Hindu festival that fetes the triumph of good over evil, Mr Miles said the significance of Diwali and the underlying theme of light over darkness was a universal one that many shared in his homeland and across the world.
"These are themes that cut across cultures, cut across divisions," Mr Miles said.
"In my time here, I have been impressed how Fijians have come together on occasions such as this in the spirit of togetherness and harmony.
"Because what we learn through shared celebration is important.
"We are reminded that, at heart, our differences are insignificant."
Mr Miles added that celebrating Diwali was simply a celebration of humanity.
