A 60-year-old Lautoka couple was lucky to escape unharmed after burglars broke into their home and made off with cash and jewellery while they were sleeping.
West police spokeswoman Naina Ragigia said the incident, which happened sometime between Friday night and early Saturday morning, was a sign that thieves were becoming more daring and homeowners had to be extra vigilant at all times.
"This couple was lucky to have not been harmed," said Mrs Ragigia.
"But this is also a clear sign that thieves are taking a lot of chances and there could be serious issues if people wake up while a burglary is in process.
"This is why we are urging people to take extra care when locking up homes at night. Do not leave any access point open or ajar because thieves or burglars could gain entry though these areas."
The couple only became aware they were robbed when they woke up and discovered the back door of their home was open.
