JOHANNESBURG - South Africa coach Heyneke Meyer said yesterday his philosophy for taking four uncapped players on their European tour is based on them gaining experience ahead of the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
Included in their 32-man squad for Tests against Wales, Scotland and France are untried hooker Scarra Ntubeni, 22, Frans Malherbe, also 22, second row forward Pieter-Steph du Toit, 21, and 23-year-old scrum-half Louis Schreuder, all of whom have never donned the Springboks shirt.
"I want to give one or two guys chances in the first two games, but you have to win the first game to build on that," said Meyer.
"In a sense you want to keep continuity and win all three, but you also need these games to see which guys can play in those conditions, so it is a bit of a catch-22.
"There is a learning curve for them. Your third hooker and your third nine barely get game time and I want to give youngsters the chance to see what they can do," he added.
"I've said to him (Ntubeni), 'you are here to learn, relax and learn from two of probably the best hookers in the world'."
The two-time world champions open their Tour against Wales on November 9, followed by Tests against Scotland and France.
