VENTURES are the team to beat in the Mates Hockey Club 25th anniversary tournament at Nadovu Park in Lautoka today.
Ventures were unbeaten in both the men's and women's division yesterday. The Ventures men's team boasting players such as Adrian Smith, Hector Smith Junior, Tevita King and James Saqacala won the opening two pool games.
Ventures shrugged off a stiff challenge from Ba's Naidrodro winning 1-0. The Ventures team then downed Falcons 2-0.
In the women's category Ventures hammered Jetsetters 4-0 and defeated Mobees 1-0.
Mates tournament media liaison officer Ernest Coffin said the weather played a big part in the success of the first day's event.
He said the 25th anniversary tournament had attracted many young talents.
"The tournament started well with all the teams turning up which is a positive sign," Coffin said.
"We have teams from Suva, Nadi Ba and Lautoka. Ventures are the top seeds. They have been winning all the tournaments in Fiji. They are a formidable side because the players have been together for a long time.
"Marist will provide stiff competition to Ventures in the men's division. We will have the final placing for all the teams. We are happy with the turnout and this is the biggest tournament in the Western Division."
