A fitness centre known as "The Crib" is the new venue for boxing in Nadi. The Crib organised its second boxing tournament for this season last weekend attracting many young participants.
The Crib managing director Kunjal Nair said the aim of staging the tournament was to boost the interest in the sport.
He said the fitness centre had opened as a ladies only gymnasium in February this year but had ventured into holding other events such as boxing.
"The boxing tournaments have gained interest from all age groups of people," Nair said.
"There were three categories in the first tournament. We had the Junior grade, B grade and A grade. However in the last tournament we received entries for B grade and Junior grade."
Nair said participants receive points from 1 to 12.
"The bout is not about power but about how many clean punches are thrown," he said.
"Whoever makes 12 points first wins the bout.
"The winner is crowned after the round robin series. Last week we had a guy known as David who won the Junior grade.
"The B grade champion was won by Mohammad Iklaaz for the second time.
"This competition is giving the sport a big boost and is gaining a lot of interest from the young boxers regardless of their experience.
"It is about giving the boxers a chance to show their skills."
The next boxing event is scheduled for November 28.
