A proposal has been mooted to set up a sports council in a bid to establish proper facilities for the minor sports in Nadi.
Sports fanatic Bobby Tikaram is the brainchild behind the idea and he is being helped by former Suva soccer rep John Grey and "The Jet" publisher Shalendra Prasad with the backing of the Nadi Chamber of Commerce.
Tikaram a former Nadi soccer rep and Fiji Football Association assistant secretary said they would liaise with FASANOC and the Fiji Sports Commission to discuss the setup of the sports council.
He said the aim was to construct multipurpose courts in the Jetset Town.
"There was a Nadi Sports Council some two decades ago," Tikaram said.
"That time people such as Arthur Jennings, Ana Birch, Paul McCoy and me were on the committee. The idea to get things going came about when I wrote to the Nadi Town Council and Nadi Chamber of Commerce saying that there are not many facilities for sports such as basketball, volleyball and netball.
"We have grounds for rugby and soccer. There are tennis courts and bowling greens.
"The aim is to construct six to eight hard courts at Koroivolu Park. It will be multipurpose courts.
"It can also be used for other outdoor functions as well. Finance is a big issue but with the backing of the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and the business community this project is viable.
"We will liaise with FASANOC and the Fiji Sports Commission to see how this new sports council could work to help establish facilities to help in the development of the sports."
The announcement was made during the Nadi Chamber of Commerce Diwali celebrations at the new Sitar Restaurant on Monday.
