FIJI Men's and Mixed Netball Association Inter-District Competition champion Lautoka has been invited to participate in an international tournament in Miami, US next year.
The offer was made to Lautoka by the Australia International Men's and Mixed Netball Association after the Sugar City side made a clean sweep in the IDC last Saturday.
Australian International Men's and Mixed Netball Association chief executive officer Peter Turk said teams from Jamaica, the US, Canada, England and Australia would be involved in the tournament in Miami.
He said men's and mixed netball had strengthened in Fiji.
"The sport has really progressed," Turk said.
"Watching the grand final between Lautoka and Suva, it was a great game. It is world class standard here now compared with 2002 when Fiji first travelled to Melbourne.
"Back in those days Fiji was getting beaten by hundred goals but we can now see the progress of the sport. It is brilliant."
"We have given the invitation to Lautoka to represent Fiji in Miami next year. Before we used to focus in the Pacific region but this is now a step up.
"It will be the first time for a team from Fiji to compete in a tournament outside the Pacific region."
Turk said they would continue with the development of the sport here.
"We have now created a good relationship with Lautoka," Turk said. "We will help them with the development. There is a bright future in the sport in the country."
The tournament in Miami will be played under the Australian International Men's and Mixed Netball Association banner.
