THE Marist Volleyball side started its 2013/2014 campaign on a high note by winning the Suva Volleyball Association season opening knockout tournament on Saturday.
They beat Drifters 3-1 in the final at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva.
Marist showed from the first whistle that they meant business to score a commanding 25-12 win in the first set.
Drifters worked hard to claw their way back in the second set 25-21 before Marist won the remaining two sets 25-14 and 25-15.
Twelve teams took part in the competition.
Mighty Heights won the Wooden Spoon with a 2-0 win over Qauia, Rockets overcame Sharks by the same score in the Shield final. G2 took out the Bowl final with a 2-0 win over Small Brothers, Saints won the Plate with a 2-1 win over Tamavua Bulls and Cakau finished third with a 2-0 win over Celtics in the 3rd and 4th place play-off.
Games co-ordinator Josaia Raketekete said the intensity of the games was high and they saw a lot of improvements.
"We can see improvements by the lower ranked team of last year like G2 and Qauia," he said.
"But the surprise package of the tournament was new club Rockets from Kinoya who managed to win the Shield today (yesterday)."
The womens knockout tournament will be played next week when the men play their first round of weekly games.
