VETERAN Ram Khelawan shot two over 72 at the Labasa Golf Club yesterday to take the overnight lead in the Fiji Premium Beer-sponsored Vanua Levu Open.
The Nadi taxi proprietor shocked the top golfers with his fine form.
He holds a two stroke lead ahead of favourite Abid Hussain going into the final 18 holes today.
Khelawan said he would be aiming for consistency.
"I haven't won a major title in a long time so this is my chance," Khelawan said.
"Patience will be the key in the final round."
Fiji Golf Club member Nigel Gounder carded 76.
D Lingam scored 78 in the B grade.
Suren Kumar scored 84. Hazim Hussein set the pace in the C grade with a score of 89.
He is followed by Ashok Maharaj on 93 and Dinesh Karan on 95.
Labasa Golf Club captain Vinod Chand said 50 golfers had entered the two-day 36 holes event.
He said the course was in perfect condition.

The top players will be seeded for the final round.
