A TEAM of police officers has been formed to address the growing number of drunkards who loiter within Nadi's tourism zone.
Chief of operations Assistant Superintendent of Police Rusiate Tudravu said the team was formed after businesses in Fiji's premier tourist town expressed their concerns to the acting Commissioner of Police Ravi Narayan.
"We met with members of the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry and they mentioned their concerns over the opening hours of nightclubs and frequent visitors to these places," he said.
"The problem they raised when the clubs closed and drunk people are out there in the streets without police visibility or presence.
"This is particularly in areas within the tourism zone between the Nadi and Namaka areas."
He said to address the problem, they had decided to dedicate a team to look after this corridor.
"There is also a backup team that is coming in from Suva just to support them during the weekends.
"Our whole effort is just to try and have our presence on the ground more visible."
