FOR the first time in 12 years amateur boxing is returning to the North.
Today, the Labasa Civic Centre will host its first ever amateur boxing program under the new Boxing Commission of Fiji.
More than 20 bouts are expected in the program.
The Labasa amateur boxing council received support from the Labasa Town Council, Ministry of Health, the Fiji Police Force, the Fiji Sports Commission and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
Commission director Malakai Veisamasama said the wait to stage a fight had finally ended.
"We're grateful that amateur boxing is back in the North after a long period of time," he said.
"We thank everyone that is supporting this program. There's a lot of interest in the North."
Team Labasa, coached by Nat Ledua, won the Fiji Games in 2001.
The North has produced top amateur and professional boxers such as Inia Catarogo, Viliame Naibono, Noa Bukai, Rahiman Kutty, Atama Raqili, Jare Lalakai, Isimeli Radrodro, Pacific Games gold medallist Subash Chand, the late Waisea Tavusa, the late Setefano Vasuibau and 2003 SPG golden boy Osea Nakanacagi.
The second program will be held on November 9, while the third is on December 7.
Today's program starts at 10am.
