A FORMER parliamentarian in the deposed Qarase government will contest the 2014 election.
George Shiu Raj told this newspaper yesterday he was still active in politics and he would contest under the Social Democratic Liberal Party banner.
He was first elected to Parliament after winning the Ra Open seat in the 1999 general elections as an independent candidate. Mr Raj contested the 2001 elections on a Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua party ticket and became the Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs.
He also won a by-election for the Ra Open seat in 2002 and also convincingly won the 2006 general elections.
Asked yesterday if he would contest the 2014 election, he said: "Most probably, yes, I will contest and I'm still active in politics.
"We need to get into politics and serve the people. I have done it before and I also served as a minister in the Qarase government.
"If you are holding a position in government, then you have to serve the nation."
