THE overcast weather conditions failed to dampen the spirits of more than 1000 athletes who competed in the Suva Zone One Athletics competition at the ANZ Stadium in Suva yesterday.
Ten schools participated in the annual event and meet official Neumi Vola said it was one of the most exciting meets they had seen in recent years.
Marist Brothers Primary School dominated the boys division.
They won the overall under-9 to under-12 titles and then the overall under-13 and under-14 titles at the competition.
In the girl's division, Suva Methodist won the U9 to U12 grades while Marcellin took out the U13-14 divisions.
Vola said the determination and the effort put in by athletes showed that there is a large pool of future stars in Suva.
"Some schools that had not participated for a few years made a return and they came out in full force," Vola said.
"The level of competition was very high and we can see that the schools and their teachers and students put in a lot of effort in training and preparation for the meet."
He said given the right guidance, many of the athletes would be able to show their full potential.
"They have the talent and they have the potential. All they need is the right guidance and coaching.
"If these athletes can get that then we can make national reps out of them."
Meanwhile, the Save the Fund was part of the meet as they hosted their 'Race for Survival'.
As part of the event, students ran with Miss Hibiscus Priscilla Reddy, former Miss Idaho Teen USA Hosanna Kabakoro and Get Set host Ateca Toganivalu.
