EDUCATING branch executives and volunteers about their roles and responsibilities during times of natural disasters is the main aim of a series of workshops being conducted by the Fiji Red Cross in the Western Division.
And according to disaster management officer Subesh Prasad, this is the time for them to begin training newer volunteers on what to expect as the natural disaster season approaches.
"We are trying to conduct this workshop in all the divisions and branches from Sigatoka to Rakiraki," Mr Prasad said.
"Over the next two weeks, we will also be meeting with various stakeholders and other organisations as well on how best we can prepare for the upcoming cyclone season.
"This is part of our annual pre-cyclone briefing."
Mr Prasad went on to say preparation was the key to surviving even the worst of natural disasters.
"Our roles during times of emergencies will be addressed to the volunteers and after the briefing with stakeholders, we will conduct exercises with the branch volunteers and executives to freshen up their knowledge of disaster situations and how to handle them.
"We also have a team in Vanua Levu.
"Today, we had the officers from the district office, officials from the different ministries, disabled association, Lautoka City Council staff and representatives from various youth groups and the Lovu HART homes.
"We are looking to build up the capacity of the branch volunteers and executives to improve on our deliberation on this during times of response."
