JANE Costello is set to make her debut for the Fiji Pearls after being named in the national side for two Test matches against the visiting Malawi Queens next month.
The Fiji under-21 rep is the only newcomer in the Unaisi Rokoura-coached side that will play the fifth place Malawi on November 2 and 4 at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.
The team skippered by tough defender Matila Waqanidrola also includes sharp shooter Afa Rusivakula and Asilika Sevutia, who are making a return to the national fold. Alesi Waqa, Vaiti Waqatabu and Kini Veilawa have all retained their positions at midcourt and will be joined by Sevutia, who is a utility midcourt player.
Lanky shooter Taraima Mitchell, who is sharing the co-captaincy role with Waqa, will be joined by Maria Lutua, Nina Cirikisuva and Rusivakula in the shooting circle.
Waqanidrola leads the defensive line-up along with Fiji U21 captain Raijeli Daveua, veteran Lusi Robanakadavu and Costello.
The reserves are Una Rauluni, Taufa Taga and Savaira Sorovaki.
Costello, who hails from Namaqumaqua, Serua, is ready to take the challenge head on.
"It feels different to be in the national side. It's a level up from the U21 but I'm looking forward to the challenge," the former Nabua Secondary School student said.
"The game against Malawi will provide me with the exposure and experience I need.
"I have been learning a lot while training with the other national players and I'm looking forward to learning more in the future."
The 19-year-old Costello is inspired by skipper Waqanidrola who is excited by the potential of the youngster.
"She is very young player who has just returned from the World Youth Netball Championship," Waqanidrola said.
"I believe the exposure and experience she got from playing there will contribute a lot to the team. She is young and fit and is explosive and has a good future."
Coach Rokoura said: "I am confident with the team selected and I am proud that Costello and Rusivakula have stepped up, learnt from their experience in Glasgow and performed at the trials to make this team.
Yes, the team is a mixture of youth and experienced players and except for Costello, the rest of the players have represented Fiji already."
