WITH Diwali just around the corner, and Christmas not too far away, the Fiji Police Force has invested in an additional six speed radar guns to monitor traffic.
Police traffic director SSP Mahesh Mishra said, in a police statement yesterday, that festive seasons were a major challenge for the force, particularly the traffic department.
"With the inclusion of these six radar guns we will have more than 20 in operation around the country this festive season," SSP Mishra said.
"This is being done for the sake of the travelling public because we are anticipating an increase in movement."
He explained the main issue to deal with was the attitude of people.
He said it was something that could not be changed even with the increase in and development of road equipment.
"The biggest challenge we have as law enforcers is attitude. The attitude of drivers and pedestrians are equally of concern and need to be addressed if we are to be successful in this campaign.
"The road death toll currently stands at 32 compared to 35 for the same period last year, and majority of the victims were pedestrians," he concluded.
Diwali will be celebrated on November 4.
