THE alleged assault of a 32-year-old sugar cane truck driver of Qalau, Ra, has sparked serious concerns from authorities over the increasing number of assault cases being reported to police.
In a statement, police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro revealed the incident, in which a security officer was charged, was one of six incidents reported to police over a period of 48 hours.
"Six cases were recorded in the Western, Southern and Northern divisions. These include incidents whereby the victims were allegedly assaulted during drinking parties to being allegedly assaulted following an argument," Ms Naisoro said.
The guard was charged for allegedly assaulting the cane truck driver following an argument about a ticket book. He was bailed to appear in court on November 11.
In another incident, a 26-year-old was charged with one count of assault causing actual bodily harm after he allegedly assaulted a 21-year-old student for refusing to have lunch with him in Labasa.
Ms Naisoro called on citizens to drink responsibly and avoid being caught in such situations as the festive season draws close.
