A 23-YEAR-OLD man will spend the next 10 years behind bars after he was found guilty for raping an English tourist in Levuka in March 2011.
Samisoni Rasiga was 18 years old at the time he committed the offence.
The High Court in Suva convicted him on three counts of rape.
High Court judge Justice Prabaharan Kumararatnam said the victim was speaking to her mother on the telephone when she was blindfolded and raped.
"She was under custody for two hours," Justice Kumararatnam said in his judgement, adding the accused threatened to kill her.
The incident came to light when the accused relayed the incident to a close relative, who in turn told his brother before the matter was reported to the police.
Rasiga, now 23, completed his education at Class Eight.
"The victim had worked at a supermarket in England to raise money to come to Fiji to help innocent children in Fiji.
"Due to this tragic incident, her teaching placement was cut short by over six to seven months.
"As a result, the victim has to resit her second year at university, adding on another year to her university education. Her family is emotionally disturbed over the incident."
Rasiga will be eligible for parole after serving eight years.
