AUSTRALIA has sent its national team to compete at the Fiji Men's and Mixed Netball Association Inter-District Championship in Lautoka next weekend.
The side arrived at the Nadi International Airport yesterday.
Akuila Cama Tuilevuka, the president of the host district Lautokas, said the inclusion of the Australian team was a major boost to the tournament. The side last competed in Fiji in 2006 and the world cup in 2004.
"We are thankful Australia is sending its national team to compete here," he said.
"It's been sometime since they last visited Fiji and we are grateful their presence will definitely boost the competition."
Tuilevuka said Nasinu Netball Association president Alini Sovu was the contact person that made everything possible for the Australian team to visit Fiji.
"We want to thank Alini too, she was liaising with the Australian team until she was ill. From there we managed to get hold of them via Facebook and now the end result is that they are here."
The Australian team will conduct clinics at primary schools in Nadi and secondary schools in Lautoka.
Tuilevuka confirmed six districts will compete at the one-day tournament next Saturday.
He said defending champion Suva would find it hard to defend the title with the inclusion of Australia.
