AFTER 15 years without employment, a person living with disability has found a job thanks to the Include Disability Employ this Ability (IDEA) project.
Alisi Dinati, who injured herself at the age of two and requires a prosthetic leg to move about, first heard about the project through The Fiji Times.
"After hearing about the project, I went and registered as a person with disability, and I gave in my CV and certificates, and they filled out a form for me," Mrs Dinati said.
Four months later, she is grateful for her new position as a switchboard operator at the Holiday Inn in Suva.
Mrs Dinati, who hails from Vanualevu Village in Tokatoka, Tailevu, had previously been employed by the Reserve Bank of Fiji as a switchboard operator, and also in the record and filing section.
She left after a bank restructure in 1998 and remained unemployed until recently.
She said she was happy because it provided an additional income for her family, and to support her two children in secondary school.
Mrs Dinati said the IDEA program had the potential to help thousands of persons with disabilities in the country find employment.
Holiday Inn general manager Joseph Della Gatta said the hotel registered for the IDEA program.
He said Mrs Dinati had a great ability and fitted in well.
"She's no different from any of us or my staff, and she meets the same standards."
