THE lives of rural women in Fiji were celebrated on Tuesday as organisations acknowledged their contribution and importance in the country's rural sector. FemLINKPACIFIC acknowledged the occasion throughout the week with the theme food security is more than just food on the table, confirmed executive director Sharon Bhagwan-Rolls.
"It requires the recognition of rural women's needs and concerns, including great disparities in income and quality of life," Ms Bhagwan-Rolls said in a statement.
"In collaboration with UN Women's Markets for Change Program and with assistance from the EU and International Women's Day, FemLINKPACIFIC is putting the focus on rural women in their multiple roles as producers and vendors for Rural Women's Day 2013."
Ms Bhagwan-Rolls said through interviews and research, the organisation realised that the workload of rural women was heavy and more action needed to be taken at a national level.
