THE Fiji Electricity Authority is calling for feasibility studies to establish the potential of a waste-to-energy plant in Naboro.
The plant will effectively turn waste collected at the Naboro landfill into a viable energy source and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
FEA CEO Hasmukh Patel confirmed this while speaking to reporters on Wednesday.
"All this waste collected in Suva, Nausori, Lami and all these surrounding areas will be collected at the landfill project in Naboro," Mr Patel said.
"So, the question we are asking is if there is potential to actually use all that rubbish and establish a waste-to-energy scheme."
Mr Patel said the FEA felt there was potential to make this project a reality and they expected results from the study to be available by next year.
