DELEGATES from the African Caribbean Pacific sugar ministers toured the FSC Lautoka mill yesterday.
ACP sub-committee on Sugar chairman Dr Patrick Gomes said the tour was informative and the delegates were impressed with the efficient progress of the mill.
"We saw the improvement in how they reduce the tonnes of sugar cane to sugar," Mr Gomes said.
"They reduced the tonnes produced from 12 to nine which is very good.
"We saw that they were more efficient and they have improved in their performance.
"The workforce, they know their various aspects very thoroughly so we learned a lot.
"We have even seen the sample of molasses that is produced here which are exported overseas to make rum.
"The quality that we saw was very good and very nice colour with a good quality grain."
He said while the improvements were vast, there was still room for improvement if Fiji wanted to be competitive in the global market.
"For the more cane coming in means there will be more sugar."
