Update: 2:04PM AS the festival of lights, Diwali, draws closer, the Mineral Resources Department is urging shop owners who are permitted sell firecrackers to stick to the sales guidelines.
Department director Malakai Finau says shops are to display their licence to sell firecrackers as they are dealing with explosives.
Mr Finau said fireworks such as woodpeckers, strikers, bangers and mini-crackers were not permitted.
He said the department would be working closely with the Ministry of Trade to monitor the sale of firecrackers and those caught selling firecrackers illegally will be fined or face a custodial sentence.
The fine for selling illegal firecrackers is $800 or a minimum of two years imprisonment.
Diwali will be celebrated on November 4.
