A TEAM of doctors from India has started performing heart and neuro surgeries at the CWM Hospital.
The doctors from Sahyadri Hospital arrived in the country at the weekend and screened patients on Sunday before conducting two heart surgeries and a neuro surgery.
While the surgeries are being done in Suva, a team from the same hospital is performing orthopaedic surgeries at Lautoka Hospital.
Accompanying the team is Sahyadri Hospital chairman and managing director Dr Charudatt Apte, a renowned neuro surgeon in Asia.
Principal surgery co-ordinator Professor Manu Munibhargav said 11 doctors were among the 26-member team.
Mr Munibhargav said two heart surgeries were performed on Monday.
"The cost of a heart surgery ranges from $20,000 to $25,000. It will cost more if the patient goes to India as other costs have to be considered."
Health Ministry spokesman Shalvin Deo said 17 patients were booked for cardiac (heart) surgery, 30 for neuro surgery and 36 for orthopaedic surgery.
