PRIME Minister and Sugar Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama highlighted the progress made by the ACP Sugar Research and Innovation Programme to assist diversification plans by member countries. He said ACP sugar producers had to give serious consideration to diversification to remain competitive and meet challenges like price volatility.
THE need for the sugar industry to move towards being the sugar cane industry was emphasised by FSC executive chairman Abdul Khan. In light of the unilateral decision by the EU to cease the preferential quota system that gave Fiji specific access to the EU market, Mr Khan said the move to produce other commodities apart from sugar was urgent.
Deliver, UN told
FIJI'S permanent representative to the UN Peter Thomson has called for the UN to deliver on its mandate of poverty eradication. Speaking in Fiji's capacity as 2013 chair of the G77 and China, he said the UN's development system was crucial to "effectively addressing poverty eradication, capacity building for development, and gender equality".
UPGRADES on the Nabouwalu-Dreketi roads are on track. China Railway First Group Limited spokesman Donald Singh said in a Ministry of Information statement that the project was expected to be completed by 2015. Mr Singh said they would build 14 high standards bridges and 209 culverts along the highway, 10.3 metres wide in diameter to give vehicles greater space.
HEALTH Minister Dr Neil Sharma has called on his staff members to prioritise adequate and sufficient health services. This came in response to complaints of delays in service because of staff members watching TV. He said staff may watch TV during lunch breaks as long as it did not disturb those on duty.
Chance to study
FIJI citizens are being given the opportunity to study in Switzerland next year. Applications for the scholarship, provided by the Swiss Government, will be administered through the PSC. PSC permanent secretary Parmesh Chand said priority would be given to candidates whose work area addressed Fiji's priority areas of training.
