FORMER national sevens coach Alivereti Dere believes the Digicel Fiji 7s team performance was exceptionally well at the Gold Coast 7s despite the side failing to retain the title over the weekend.
Fiji lost to England 12-26 in the quarterfinals of the first tournament of the HSBC Sevens World Series.
They were relegated to the plate competition which they eventually won thrashing Kenya 36-0.
"They were unlucky to go into the plate competition," Dere said.
He said the experienced England side proved too strong for the Fijians which featured a few senior players and the rest were first-timers on the international scene.
"I think the side did exceptionally well in the tournament.
"Many of them are new to it but they did very well in the tournament."
The former national captain said it was all in new coach Ben Ryan's hand.
"I think he will see the performance of the boys in the tournament and then do an overall review.
"And we will just have to wait and see what he does next."
Fiji lies fifth on the series points table with 13 points. New Zealand leads with 22 points after winning the Gold Coast title by beating Australia 40-19.
