Update: 12:56PM THE Fiji Government and sugar stakeholders are no longer interested in just keeping the industry afloat and diversification plans currently being discussed and implemented are the way forward for the future.
This was the message by Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama while delivering his opening address at the 13th African Caribbean Pacific Ministerial Conference on Sugar this morning.
"With the 2013 season well underway, I can confidently say that we are on the right path. It's no longer just about keeping the industry afloat. We are more ambitious than that," Commodore Bainimarama said.
He said the industry's long-term goal was to increase production, diversify to encourage more revenue streams and add value to raw sugar production.
Close to 150 delegates from 27 countries are attending the five day conference at Shangri-La' Fijian Resort and Spa in Sigatoka.
