THE Suva men's and women's sides are on track to defend their titles at the MH Fiji Open Hockey Championships in Suva.
The two teams recorded big wins in their first two matches of the competition at the National Hockey Centre yesterday.
The men's number one side thrashed Nadi 14-0 while the women's side thumped the visiting Liverpool Moorbank club from Australia 5-0 and then Levuka by the same score.
Competition official and Fiji Hockey Federation development officer Tai Smith said the level of competition was higher than expected.
"Very very tough competition which exceeded our expectations," she said.
"Levuka came back strongly in their games but teams like Suva and Lautoka proved too strong."
Suva II suffered a setback when their men's side drew with Lautoka but they were penalised for fielding a Nadi player.
"When a team is penalised or defaults a game their opposing team is given five goals.
"So when Suva II fielded a Nadi player against Lautoka, the result was 5-0 in favour of the westerners."
Meanwhile, Liverpool Moorbank donated balls, sticks and shin guards to the FHF for the junior development program.
