Update: 1:30PM POLICE have once again called on drivers to be vigilant while on the roads, especially during school hours.
This is after two separate accidents involving two eight-year-old students in Suva and Waiqele in Vanua Levu.
"The first incident was recorded along Rewa Street around 2.30pm whereby an 8-year-old student was hit by a vehicle," police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said.
"The driver failed to stop after the accident and police are requesting anyone with information to call 917 or their nearest police station."
The victim is under observation at the CWM Hospital.
In a separate incident an 8-year-old student was hit by a vehicle driven by a 37-year-old along the Waiqele Road.
"The student is alleged to have run across the road after getting off a bus, however, investigations are ongoing to determine what transpired," Ms Naisoro said.
The victim is in a serious condition at the Intensive Care Unit at the Labasa Hospital while the driver is in custody.
"The Fiji police continues to call on drivers to be more alert especially during peak traffic hours. Of particular concern is before and after school hours.
"Children are often in the habit of playing with their friends and their attention is not on their own safety. Parents and guardians are also requested to continuously talk to their children about road safety."
