Update: 12:42PM POLICE are calling on people to secure their properties and valuables - particularly farm animals as the festive season begins in earnest this month.
Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said: "Some reports of livestock theft received are a result of owners' neglect where their animals wander away and they report the matter to police saying it has been stolen."
"For the past month the Western Division recorded the highest number of theft cases in September followed by Eastern and Southern Division.
"Majority of the items stolen were mainly livestock, jewelry, mobile phones and electrical appliances."
She said people were looking for an easy way to make money during the festive season and the public needed to be aware.
"People must be aware of the easy entry points that could be used by would-be opportunists and ensure efforts are made to secure their homes.
"We do anticipate a lot of movement over the festive season and police will be pushing forward manpower to deter would be offenders."
