THE Liverpool Moorbank women's hockey side will be the lone international team competing at the MH Fiji Open Championships which begins today.
Fiji Hockey Federation development officer Tai Smith said the Australian side would spice up the women's competition of which Suva is the defending champion.
"The Liverpool side competes in the New South Wales league competition in Australia and they are a very strong side," she said.
"They will give the local teams an opportunity to be exposed to a different level and style of hockey compared to what we play here."
Former Fiji resident Nadeem Khan has been negotiating with the Australian Fijian Hockey Association to send teams to Fiji annually.
Suva I will defend the men's title at the two-day event. Smith said Lautoka, Ba and Levuka would be its toughest opponents.
"The game was recently revived in Ba and they have come up very strong in a short time and Lautoka and Levuka should not be underestimated."
Meanwhile, major sponsor MH handed over a cheque of $10,000 to FHF for the Fiji Open.
"They have been our major sponsor for the past three years and their financial assistance will go towards funding the travels of the team from Levuka and the Western Division."
