INSTILLING awareness about the plight of people living with visual impairments will be the key objective of a two-week long White Cane Awareness campaign to be launched today.
White Cane Safety day is celebrated on October 12 to raise awareness.
Program officer with United Blind Persons of Fiji Anaseini Vakaidia said White Cane Safety day, celebrated around the world on October 12, was set aside to promote recognition and acceptance of the white cane as a symbol of the need of visually impaired individuals for specific assistance.
"This is also to remind every citizen of their duty of care and accord due respect to the sight-impaired," Ms Vakaidia said.
"The main reasons for special commemoration are to stimulate public awareness on the rights and welfare of blind persons.
"It is also to promote recognition and acceptance of the white cane as a symbol of mobility for blind persons.
"People also need to promote and protect the physical, moral and social well being of blind persons."
