A GROUP of cyclists celebrated Fiji Day by participating in a race that began in Nadi yesterday.
The annual BOC Tour Fiji that began at the temple end of Nadi Town boasted its biggest number of competitors with a total field of 17.
Cycling Fiji president Dom Sansom said the tour which began five years ago was born around coffee at the ROC in Suva.
"We started off as a small group of social cyclists that used to meet at the ROC 10 years ago and decided to form a competitive club so we formed Cycling Fiji which is part of the Oceania Cycling Federation," he explained.
"The race which kicked off today is in stages and the first stage is a 70km race from Nadi to Korotogo. The race continues tomorrow from Korotogo to Pacific Harbour before the final leg to Suva."
Mr Sansom said cycling was a unique sport — in that — despite the competitiveness displayed by riders, it was one of the few events where participants still had a sense of chivalry.
Second place getter in last year's competition — Christian Carling — has been tipped as the man to beat in the contest.
