THE international community continued to send well wishes to Fiji yesterday as the nation marked its 43rd anniversary as an independent state.
In a statement issued by the French Embassy, French President Francois Hollande sent his warmest congratulations to Fiji.
"France has taken note of the positive developments in Fiji for a return to democracy in 2014," Mr Hollande said.
"In particular, the promulgation of the Constitution on September 6 was an important step in this process.
"France and the European Union support the organisation of free and transparent elections in Fiji and encourage all efforts in this direction."
Mr Hollande also noted the important steps Fiji was taking in terms of battling the effects of climate change here and the Pacific region.
"The fight against the negative effects of climate change is a common challenge for our two countries.
"France pursues an ambitious environmental diplomacy and offered to host the conference of parties to the UN Convention on Climate Change (COP 21) in 2015," he said.
