APART from bringing international tourists to the village of Nausori Highlands, a locally-owned tour operator has also assisted women to set up their own self-help businesses.
Highland Eco Tours Fiji co-director Howard Politini Jr said women from the village were assisted through a loaves and fishes scheme established by his company.
"The idea of the scheme came from the Bible and we wanted to help these women help themselves and their families," he said.
"Through the scheme, we were able to purchase handicraft and accessories from other places which we gave to them to enable them to sell to tourists we took to the village.
"None of the money they earn comes back to us. It goes directly to the women and their families."
Mr Politini said commission paid to the village for allowing tourists to tour their community also went to a village trust set up to fund development.
Aseri Tamani said the self-help business had allowed her to pay her children's school fees.
