SIGATOKA was declared the country's first healthy town yesterday.
The announcement was made by the subdivisional medical officer for Nadroga-Navosa, Dr Sravaniya Dasi, at the start of the annual Fiji Day Sigatoka Bilibili Race.
"This is a proud day for the people of Sigatoka and you deserve all the praise for putting in the effort and making a commitment to ensuring Sigatoka is the healthiest municipality in Fiji," she said.
Dr Dasi said Sigatoka was announced the first healthy town after meeting criteria set out by the World Health Organisation.
"We have put in place measures in Sigatoka to ensure that people have access to healthy lifestyle activities.
"The market square has been designated a smoke-free zone, we advocate for the consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables, the town council together with police and provincial office is putting in measures to control the sale and consumption of alcohol and we have established a walkway along the riverbank for residents."
Dr Dasi said measures put in place were monitored to ensure people were consistently reminded of the benefits of eating healthy and maintaining healthy lifestyles.
Divisional Medical Officer Dr Susana Nakalevu emphasised the need to ensure the declaration was the first step in an continuing effort to maintain a healthy life.
