NEW Digicel Fiji 7s coach Ben Ryan said there were still areas of improvement as the national sevens team had its first hit out on the Gold Coast yesterday.
The team had a scrimmage session with Portugal at the Bond Pirates Rugby ground.
Ryan, who had his first two days of training with the team, said while he was pleased with what he had seen there was still room for improvement.
"There are plenty things to work on but I'm happy with this session," Ryan said.
"It's Wednesday and the boys need a bit of a blowout — a hard session as yesterday (Tuesday) was my first run with the team.
"It was new to them, a bit up and down but captain Osea Kolinisau has done a great job in getting the boys together," Ryan said.
Ryan said the training session with Portugal also gave the boys the opportunity to set up at kick-off
"Portugal was good in their kick-off and were strong in defence so the boys now know what to do when they face them in pool play.".
Playing Portugal in the scrimmage yesterday was not a worry for Ryan, even though the teams will be playing in the same pool.
"I don't think playing Portugal in this scrimmige session will give many things away they don't already know but it gave the boys the opportunity to test themselves and also show their strengths."
Fiji plays Portugal in its second pool C match on Saturday at 5.14pm.
Fiji opens its campaign against Canada at 1.58pm before meeting Wales in the feature match of the pool at 9.24pm.
