A CROWD of about 1000 people including students from nine schools in Cakaudrove converged on Savusavu's foreshore to celebrate the 43rd anniversary of the country's independence.
Proud students and adults marched along the Savusavu Town's main street towards the foreshore for yesterday's celebrations.
Officiating at the celebrations, divisional education officer North Satya Shandil said: "As a witness of the original independence celebrations in 1970 when I was 10 years old, I can say that the country has moved forward from its humble beginnings," Mr Shandil said.
"Fiji became a colony in 1874 before becoming independent in 1970 and it faced changes that had influenced the country's bid for independence."
Mr Shandil commended the government's efforts in establishing a common identity for the different ethnic groups in Fiji.
